Family-Friendly Activities to do While Social Distancing

It's no surprise that this summer has been a challenging one with ongoing restrictions due to COVID-19. While social distancing is the best and safest thing you can do right now, you and your children may start to feel a little antsy—and that’s completely normal.

If you're continuously looking for new ideas to keep everyone occupied, below are some fun and local activities to do that will keep you and your family safe.

Visit the Minnesota Zoo

The Minnesota Zoo is now open to the public from 10am to 4pm daily! All guests must purchase or reserve tickets online ahead of time for the selected date and time. Reservations may be made up to 30 days in advance. This timed entry allows for an even flow of guests throughout the day.

Increased cleaning protocols have been implemented in public spaces and high-touch areas throughout the Zoo. Additionally, capacity is limited to prevent crowding and allow guests room to explore.

Visit their website to learn more and plan your visit.

Stay connected to family and friends

It can feel strange to be a child and not be allowed to have regular play dates and sleepovers with friends and neighbors. The following ideas are ways to stay connected with loved ones:

  • Set up FaceTime or Skype play dates with friends and family members. You can just chat or you can get more creative and paint pictures “together,” sing karaoke as a group, or even watch Netflix!
  • Set up pen pals to write letters and mail them to friends.
  • Create a Zoom account and chat with multiple friends at once.

Explore a state park

One thing that’s still open amid the pandemic: nature. There are 75 Minnesota state parks and recreation areas ready for you to explore! All state parks are open for day use. Keep in mind that some bathrooms, vault toilets, and shower buildings are open, but visitors are asked to bring their own hand sanitizer and cleaning wipes given the rustic conditions in most state parks.
