Happy Valentine’s Day!

If you’ve recently learned you’re pregnant, you have an extra reason to celebrate today.

But in the midst of this celebration, there’s probably one question that’s on your mind: now what?

The next nine months (and the years beyond) are going to be an adventure. What’s the best way to prepare to welcome your baby, and keep yourself and your baby safe and healthy along the way?

Here are 5 prenatal care tips every expectant mother needs to know.

1. Exercise

Regular exercise is a great way to care for yourself and your baby. Regular exercise can reduce or prevent back pain, prevent excessive weight gain, and reduce the risk of gestational diabetes and high blood pressure. Plus, you’ll simply feel better.

Most doctors recommend 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week during pregnancy. Looking for ideas? Here are 5 safe fitness activities during pregnancy.

During pregnancy, you should avoid activities with a high risk of falling or abdominal trauma, exercising at high altitudes, and scuba diving. If you have questions about specific activities, please ask your provider.

Is low energy stopping you from getting out the door? During pregnancy, it’s normal to feel less energetic than usual. However, the benefits of exercise still usually outweigh the risks, so talk to your doctor to find an exercise plan that’s right for you.

2. Healthy Eating

If you’re pregnant, it may seem like many of your favorite foods are now off-limits.

But don’t worry! It’s still possible to enjoy a wide variety of foods during your pregnancy. Who knows? You may even discover a new favorite food or recipe.

Eating healthy is a great way to help you feel your best. Plus, it’s important for your baby’s development.

3. Work

Most women can continue to work throughout their pregnancy.

To stay comfortable at work, take frequent short breaks, use a chair with good lower back support, wear flat shoes with good support, and consider wearing support stockings.

This is also a great time to start thinking about how you want to balance work and childcare after your baby is born. Remember, different solutions work for different people.

4. Medication

During your pregnancy, you may experience more aches and pains than usual.

However, it’s important to be cautious with the medications you take.

You may wish to start with non-medical pain relievers, such as a warm shower or bath (just keep the water at 98 degrees Fahrenheit or cooler) or a pregnancy massage.

Here’s a list of medications to avoid, and safe alternatives.

5. Appointments

Your first prenatal appointment will probably be your longest. So, it’s the perfect time to ask questions and start planning for the next nine months and beyond.

What happens at this important appointment? And how can you prepare?
