Breastfeeding Basics: What You Need to Know

By the time your baby is born, you will most likely have decided whether or not to breastfeed. Be assured, no matter how you feed your baby, the most important consideration is a relaxed atmosphere of acceptance and lots of love.

For many women who choose to breastfeed, nursing can be tough in the beginning. But with patience, effort, and lots of practice, both of you will get the hang of it. The best part about breastfeeding? Your baby will thrive on your milk and the cuddly closeness that breastfeeding offers.

So before you pack your bag for the hospital -- or get frustrated with breastfeeding postpartum -- become acquainted with this important new job.

Breastfeeding Benefits

Women have been breastfeeding their babies since the beginning of time. That doesn't mean, however, that it's something that just happens on its own. Once you get past the initial trial-and-error days of finding the best system for you, nursing becomes one of motherhood's most rewarding responsibilities.

Breastfeeding is recognized by healthcare professionals as the preferred method of infant nutrition. Breastfed babies have lower incidence of allergies, spitting up, colic, diarrhea, SIDS, and eczema. These babies don't have the problems associated with intolerance to cow's milk. Breastfeeding also helps protects your baby from disease by passing along powerful antibodies from your immune system. And last but not least, breastfeeding is a great way to bond with your baby.

How to Prepare for Breastfeeding Your Baby

If you decide to breastfeed your baby, you'll need to pay extra attention to your nutrition. It’s important that you’re eating a well-balanced diet and consuming an adequate amount of calories. Staying hydrated is also a must for moms who are breastfeeding. Every woman requires a different amount of water intake, but a good rule of thumb is to avoid getting to the point where you feel thirsty.

When you breastfeed, try to relax, and sit or lie in a comfortable position. Typically, breastfed infants nurse for 5 to 15 minutes on each breast and need to be fed every two to three hours. Most infants getting enough milk will wet diapers four to six times a day.

Uterine cramping may occur initially with breastfeeding, but should resolve within several days to one week. Contact your provider if your cramping continues.
